The NYPD Auxiliary Police is a subdivision of the NYPD. It is an unpaid, unarmed reserve police force for the City of New York. Auxiliary Police officers assist the NYPD with uniformed patrols and provide traffic and crowd control at accidents, fires, demonstrations and other major events. The vehicles used by the Auxiliary Police were often older vehicles that had been previously used by other devisions of the NYPD. The Auxiliary Police now receive new vehicles as needed.
Begining in 2008 the NYPD began using new markings and white vehicles for Auxiliary Police units. Previously vehicles were painted dark blue, with the exception of some Highway Patrol Auxiliary Police vehicles. Highway Patrol Auxiliary Police used normal white Highway Patrol cars with a removable AUXILIARY decal on the car.
